But these questions eventually prove less tantalizing than those Hwang emphasizednot the hows of this seduction but the whys. If we want to believe something badly enoughand if it plays directly upon our vanities and prejudicesthen, the playwright suggests, nothing so prosaic as physical reality is likely to stop us. Butterfly cant help shrinking from an evocative fantasia into a kind of narrow study of psychological pathology. In the plays intricate structure, Gallimard simultaneously told us his life story and led us through a comic explication of the plot of Puccinis Madama Butterfly; the movie gives us a much more linear narrative, minus the personal history that helped make sense of Gallimards psyche and the digressions that connected his saga to wider public issues. Capturing the plays spark   In the hands of director David Cronenberga sometimes inspired filmmaker who has never shied from the disturbing or the grotesquethe story unfolds at a distance from us. Part of the trouble is that Jeremy Ironsunlike John Lithgow, who played Gallimard on Broadwaymakes no effort to reach out and seduce us into looking at his lover, Song, through his eyes. Part of the trouble is that, without the plays self-presentational speeches, the actor really has no opportunity to do so. The movie M. Butterfly returns to stage setting in its final scene: Gallimard appears to be putting on some kind of solo performance piece for his fellow prisoners. Its really the films futile, last-ditch effort to recapture some of the plays spark by borrowing its operatic finalein which Gallimard turns out to be the true Butterfly of the piece, betrayed by a faithless lover. But what was a natural consummation of the story in the theatrea kind of ritual of completion that, in John Dexters majestic production, brought the play full circlecomes off here as a rickety melodramatic contrivance. Its never clear what the man is doing on this peculiar prisonstage in the first place: Since when do inmates perform operatic scenes for one another? Thats not the sort of question that should be occupying us at the movies climax. In Six Degrees of Separation, Guare, too, was inspired by a news storythis one about a young man who fibbed his way into the homes of a number of wealthy Manhattan couples under the pretense that he was Sidney Poitiers son and attended Harvard with their children. Both play and movie use that odd newsbite as the jumping-off point for an ambitious meditation on wealth and poverty, imagination and experience, and the interconnectedness of human lives. As staged by Jerry Zaks at Lincoln Center Theater, Six Degrees played with whirlwind fluidity; actors hopped onto and off the largely bare stage from the front row of the theatre, and the two central charactersan art dealer named Flan and his wife, Ouisatold their story directly to the audience. In the movie, Guare has the couple recounting their tales to friends and cocktail-circuit acquaintances at New York museums, concert-hall lobbies and society luncheons. Its a film in which, on the surface, the action seems to be all gab. Under director Fred Schepisi, Six Degrees performs the usual opening-out-the-action stunts: The movie is full of Manhattan locations, from the Strand Bookstore to the Rainbow Room to the Waverly moviehouse, that serve as signposts to the particulars of Flans and Ouisas lives. But the high-contrast metropolis isnt just used as an eye-catching backdrop; Six Degrees looks deep into the nature of a city thats built on hustles up and down the social ladderand that plants dreams in people with no intention of ever delivering the goods. Guare doesnt simply finesse his way around this problem; he turns it to the scripts advantage. In one of the plays climactic speeches, Ouisa objects to taking the whole story of Paul Poitierfor whom she has developed a frustrated, quasi-parental affectionand turning it into an anecdote to dine out on. The thought was powerful enough on the stage, but in the moviewhere weve been watching the couple dine out on anecdotes all alongit carries an extra, transformative insight. As they tell their friends their story throughout the film, Flan and Ouisa seem to be on a kind of conversational autopilot. When, late in the film, Ouisa declares her resistance to becoming a human jukebox spilling out anecdotes, we look back at the earlier scenes and realize that this is the exact image for how she and her husband have been behaving. There was no way for the film version of Six Degrees to duplicate the in-your-face dynamics of the stage production. But that doesnt rule out the possibility of a satisfying movie. Unlike Hwang and Cronenbergwho were unable to find a new language to replace the confessional dynamics of M. Butterfly, the playGuare and Schepisi found something else for their film to do that the play couldnt, and thus secured its independent value.

Whats a Good PSAT Score for a Sophomore

What's a Good PSAT Score for a Sophomore SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips You wouldn't go for your driver's license test before ever getting behind the wheel, right? In reality, you'd practice your three-point turns and parallel parking first so you're ready and know what to expect when the real test comes. Just as you suspected, this scenario's an analogy for the PSAT. Rather than sitting for it junior year without a practice run, you can improve your performance if you've already taken it in 10th grade. Taking the PSAT as a sophomore is a great, low-pressure way to familiarize yourself with the test,gauge your level, and figure out where you need to improve. With this in mind, we'll look at what PSAT scores aregood for sophomores and how to improve them even more for junior year. But first, let's consider howthe PSAT is scored. How Is the PSAT Scored? The new PSAT is scored between 320 and 1520 points. You'll get two scaled scores between 160 and 760: one for Math and one for Reading and Writing combined (called Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, or EBRW). You'll also get to see how you performed on each of the three sections with a test score between 8 and 38. (This scoring scale differs from that on the old PSAT, which gave you 20-80 points on three separate sections.) The new PSAT scoring scale helps you predict your SAT scores. If you score 1500 on the PSAT, you're likely to achieve a similarly high score on the SAT. The scale is shifted about 80 points lower than that of the SAT (which has a total score range of 400-1600) sincethe PSAT is a slightly easier test. Therefore, you can only compare the scores up to about 1520; beyond that, you can't equate a perfect PSAT score with a perfect SAT score. Your PSAT score report will give you lots of data, including your scaled scores, section scores, and subscores, which further break down your performance. For the sake of figuring out what makes a good PSAT score for a sophomore, let's consider another important piece of data: your percentiles. Percentiles compare your section and composite scores with those of other test takers. So if your Math score falls in the 80th percentile, you've scored higher than 80% of test takers (and the remaining 20% scored higher than you). Basically, the higher your percentile, the better you scored on the PSAT compared with everyone else. Read on to learn about percentiles and how they can help us answer our question of what's a good PSAT score for a 10th grader. We can define a"good" PSAT score for a sophomore as one that's higher than the 75th percentile.This means that you scored higher than 75% of other sophomores who took the PSAT.For sophomores, 75th percentile scores are around 520-540on each section, or about 1050-1060 total. An "OK" PSAT score for a sophomore is one that's higher than the 50th percentile, meaning you scored higher than half of test takers. In contrast, anexcellent score is one that's higher than the 90th percentile, or 90% of test takers. What DoPSAT Score Percentiles Mean? To understand how we chose the scores to represent "good," "OK," and "excellent" PSAT scores, as well as how you can interpret PSAT scores,you'll need to understandPSAT percentiles. This section will give you a more in-depth look at PSAT percentiles and the information you can get from them. YourPSAT score report will feature lots of score types and data. Among this data, you'll get not just one but two percentiles comparing your scores with those of other students. These percentiles are called the Nationally Representative Percentile and the User Percentile. The reason behind using two percentiles remains vague, and some educators have suggested that the College Board uses the Nationally Representative Percentile as a way to inflate students' scores and make the PSAT appear less competitive than it really is. Regardless, we'll focus on User Percentiles, which compare all students in a grade who typically take the PSAT (as opposed to the other percentile, which includes all students in a grade, even those who didn't take the PSAT- weird, I know). Below is a chart based on info from the College Board's 2018 PSAT score report, which gives PSAT User Percentiles specifically for 10th graders. As you look through the data, note that the same scores translate to slightly different percentiles. In past years, Math tended to be more competitive than Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW). Here, the comparisons are less straightforward. Check out the data, and then read on for further interpretation of how these sections compare. This means that most of the time you'll need to achieve a slightly higher score on EBRW to make it into the same percentile as you did on Math. For example, a Math score of 500 puts you in the 68th percentile, but the same score on EBRW puts you in only the 62nd percentile. Why Are PSAT Scores Important for Sophomores? Your sophomore year PSAT scores aren’t as important as your PSAT scores from your junior year when you’ll be able to compete for National Merit, but they're still useful. You can use your sophomore PSAT scores to estimate how well you’ll do on the PSAT next year and on the SAT later on. This can help you gauge how much studying you'll need to do to qualify for National Merit and/or meet your SAT score goals. Preparing for National Merit as a Sophomore The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) identifies juniors who get top scores on the PSAT. Students whose PSAT scores are in the top 1% are named Semifinalists. Reaching this stage can give you a big boost in college admissions and make you eligible for numerous scholarships,. Thus, many students who take the PSAT as sophomores do so to prepare themselves for when they take the PSAT as juniors and can compete for National Merit. There are several things you can do as a sophomore to help you prepare for the PSAT as a junior and potentially qualify you for National Merit. If you're already scoring in the 95th percentile or above as a sophomore, you're well on track to qualifying as a Semifinalist and eventually Finalist. While these are outstanding scores, National Merit scholarships only go to the top 1% of juniors, so you'll have to do some serious prep to compete with other juniors and bring up your scores to the top of the pack by the following year. If National Merit is in your sights, you'll want to aim for a score of around 1440 on the PSAT, or about 35-36 as your "test score" on each section (when you take the test as a junior). Remember, though, that you have lots of time to prepare for both the PSAT and SAT, so if you’re not happy with your scores, there’s still time to develop a solid study plan and improve your scores. You can use official PSAT practice tests as well as official SAT questions available through the College Board website and Khan Academy (a partner website). The abundance of practice material for the old (pre-2015) PSAT doesn't have to go to waste either. Many of these questions, especially the Math and reading comprehension ones, are still relevant. Just make sure to familiarize yourself with the changes to the test so you can shift your focus to the most important skills. If you're disappointed with your sophomore-year PSAT scores, don't worry! You still have plenty of time to learn and practice. Use your feelings as motivation to improve next year through focused, disciplined, and effective test prep. #3: Target Your Weaknesses After you've taken your first PSAT practice test, look it over and see which questions you got wrong and which ones you got right. Did you score well on Reading and Writing but struggle with Math? Were there specific types of questions or topics that gave you trouble? Take time to figure out where you need to make the most improvements. Then, get to work targeting those weaknesses! For each question you got wrong on your practice test, look at the correct answer and try to re-solve it, using the correct answer as a guide. K unwillingly agreed to pay the extra money and A continued with the delivery. Later on K refused to pay the extra money to A and A sued K. It was held that A had not given consideration to K to buy K’s promise of extra money. A could not say that making the delivery was the consideration, as A was contractually bound to make these deliveries under the original contract. With the case of Dream Design the consideration will not be sufficient where a contractually duty already exist. The fact is that Parma Steel and Dream Design agreed on a written contract dated October 22, 2009 for the supply of fabricated steel at a cost of $165 per ton for â€Å"Grade60,000 and $156 per ton for â€Å"Hard Grade. † In this case Parma Steel could not say that making the deliveries was the consideration, as Parma Steel was already contractually bound to make these deliveries under t he original contract. According to Tucker J. there was no consideration for the new agreement. The plaintiff was already obliged to deliver the defendant goods at the rates agreed under the terms of the original agreement. The facts constituted economic duress but the court has to refuse to enforce the new agreement for the increase in the prices or the higher charges as it lacked any fresh consideration from the purchaser, Dream Design. Lava Lava is the name for magma that has been released onto the Earth's surface. When lava comes to the Earth's surface, it is red hot and may have temperatures of more than 2012 degrees Fahrenheit. Fluid lava flows swiftly down a volcano's slopes. Sticky lava flows more slowly. As the lava cools, it may harden into many different formations. Highly fluid lava hardens into smooth, folded sheets of rock called pahoehoe. Stickier lava cools into rough, jagged sheets of rock called aa. Pahoehoe and aa cover large areas of Hawaii, where the terms originated. The stickiest lava forms flows of boulders and rubble called block flows. It may also form mounds of lava called domes. Other lava formations are spatter cones and lava tubes. Spatter cones are steep hills that can get up to 100 feet high. They build up from the spatter of geyser-like eruptions of thick lava. Lava tubes are tunnels formed from fluid lava. As the lava flows, its exterior covering cools and hardens. But the lava below continues to flow. Israel and Judas God trusted two men to deliver His message to the tribe of Judas and the children of Israel they were the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah. (Mailer, 2006) Both of them got caught up In there on sinful acts and disobeyed God. God was angry and punished the two for their wrong doings. It was though the consequences from God that the two prophets begin to see how important and beneficial It was to them and to the lives of Christians that Gods message get delivered. The message God gave Prophet Isaiah a message to stress the importance of how they needed to repent of their wicked ways and come back to God.Because of the love Isaiah had for his people he was compelled to warn them and save them from punishment from God directly. Isaiah core message was to inform his people that only God can save them, He is our King the only God we are to worship. The message God gave Jeremiah the Prophet was to warn thousand be cautious of fake prophets. Judas started to believe what the fak e prophets were saying over Jeremiah. They soon saw that everything Jeremiah was trying to tell them happened. (Willis, 2011). The message Jeremiah delivered said the Lord has been giving me his messages, and I have passed them long to you all faithfully but time and time again none of you are listening to me (Holy Bible, 2001). God Instructed Jeremiah to warn Judas to stop living wicked lives and participating in evil doings but they didn't take heed to his warnings. God tried to warn Israel many times about their sins by sending those prophets. Each time they did not listen and were blatantly disobedient. Judas and Israel did things like killing babies and offering them up as sacrifices; they worshiped false idols, and participated in sexual immorality.They would not stop there sinful acts nor did they see any wrong in what they were doing and repent. This made God so angry that He allowed another nation with deadly weapons and soldiers that were more powerful than they to war aga inst them. The nation God sent took everything including food, livestock even their sons and daughters. This nation destroyed their entire towns. God was out raged by Israel and Judo's sins. He was angry they had the desire to worship other Idols, Israel and Judas brought the wrath of God on them.Since Israel and Judas refused to obey God, He said would summon all the armies under King Nebuchadnezzar to put them all to end completely. God was sending His wrath upon Israel and Judas to punish them for their sins. He was sentencing them to seventy years as captives. Isaiah had a strong desire to help stop the sins of his people. He felt that the people of Israel had become a sinful nation as a whole. He believes that Israel left God and dishonored Him by their constant and deliberate disobedience to Him. Isaiah said that because of the sins of Israel it caused them to go in a direction opposite from God.Prophet Jeremiah warned Judas they should repent for their sins or God would send a curse upon them, they would be destroyed and turned Into slaves. God gave word to the prophets telling them that â€Å"Because Masses king of Judas has done these abominations (he has acted more wickedly than all the Amorists who were before him, and has also made Judas sin with his Idols), therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Behold, I am bringing such calamity upon Jerusalem Jerusalem the measuring line of Samara and the plummet of the house of ABA; I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down.So I will forsake the remnant of my inheritance and deliver them into the hand of their enemies; and they shall become victims of plunder to all their enemies, because they eve done evil in my sight, and have provoked me to anger since the day their fathers came out of Egypt, even to this day' (Holy Bible, 2001). All God wanted from Israel and Judas was from them to ask for fogginess from their sins and come back to Him. (Willis, 2011). Jer emiah 30:1 declares ‘l will also bring them back to the land that I gave to their forefathers and they shall possess it. (Holy Bible, 2001). Jeremiah was told by God that He was sending a nation to attack Jerusalem. God also wanted the name nation to attack Israel, but when then had seen what happened to Jerusalem hey repented so God intervened and they all came back to God and received Him as their Lord and Savior. All of these happening were apart of Gods plan all along. The same messages given to Isaiah and Jeremiah back then are still relevant to Christians all around the world today.Isaiah gave the message to his people that they needed to repent from their sins, leave there evil ways behind them, and surrender their lives back to God. That same message is the â€Å"now word† for this day in time. When we take a look at today's society as a whole we can see the evil amongst us. There is so such violence, we are dealing with homosexuality at a growing rate, we have thieves are robbers, and fornication. These issues we need to turn away from and stop doing because it displeases God.If society can get it together and surrender to God the His Kingdom on earth world be powerful. But we won't do it for the same reasons Israel and Judas didn't; because they wanted to please their flesh. If we Just have a heart to serve God and live a life that is acceptable to Him things would be better. We would not be perfect but we would be constantly striving for perfection because God would then be the main focus. We must repent if we want to grow spiritually.Repentance is not so much for God but for us to acknowledge our wrongs so that we can know not to do it again. Not only has that repentance from our sins brought us back to God.
